Environmental Policy
Our Commitment
At Besso Distribution Ltd, we are committed to identifying, managing, and minimising the environmental impact of our operations. Through our structured Environmental Management System, we ensure compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, and integrate environmental considerations into our risk management processes on a site-by-site basis. We are also dedicated to communicating our environmental performance openly and transparently.
Organisational Responsibility
- The Head of the Social Responsibility Committee holds overall responsibility for the development and implementation of this policy. This involves collaboration with independent environmental health consultants, department heads, staff, and approved suppliers to maintain compliance with current environmental legislation.
- The policy is continuously reviewed and developed in consultation with department managers to ensure it remains practical and effective. Guidance and updates are shared with the production site and national logistics teams for consistent action.
- Employee engagement is actively encouraged. Staff are invited to contribute ideas and suggestions through a comment box located in a central shared area.
- Environmental policy requirements will be included in all future tenders for new contracts, ensuring alignment with our sustainability goals.
- Area managers are responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented and maintained both on-site and off-site.
- Compliance with this policy is regularly assessed during site audits conducted by the Head of the Social Responsibility Committee and formally reviewed annually.
Sustainable Sourcing
- Suppliers are encouraged to minimise packaging where possible, while maintaining appropriate food safety and hygiene standards.
- We prioritise the use of biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable materials in our supply chain.
- Where economically viable, our production site uses environmentally responsible foodstuffs, including those certified for animal welfare.
- Besso Distribution Ltd ensures that no food products used in our operations contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients.
Recycling and Waste Management Glass:
- To mitigate the risk of food contamination, the use of glass containers is prohibited on-site.
Cans:
- We promote the recycling of steel and aluminium cans by placing designated bins in staff areas and near drinks vending machines.
Plastics:
- While complete elimination of plastic use is currently not feasible, we are committed to minimising its use and operate an established plastic recycling system across our sites.
Paper and Cardboard:
- We strive to reduce paper consumption in daily operations. Scrap paper is reused whenever possible, and all waste paper is sent for recycling.
Printer Cartridges:
- Wherever possible, we use recyclable printer cartridges and ensure proper disposal through collection programs using provided recycling bags.
